Double Exposure Watergram Silver Gelatin Prints
Mala beads come in a string of 108 and are used for meditation, mantra and prayer.
Some say number 108 represents 108 earthly desires, the masculine and feminine energy of the Sanskrit alphabet,
108 energy lines in the Heart Chakra or 108 stages in the journey of life.
Some say the number 1 stands for God, the universe or your own highest truth;
0 stands for emptiness and humility in spiritual practice; and
8 stands for infinity and timelessness with many other interpretations connected to the human body, soul or planetary movements in the universe.
When the mala piece is broken, a cycle of suffering is over and we move to the next step in our own spiritual development.
In order to create this installation, I used photographs of my broken mala piece, that I have worn and used for years,
collaged on paper decorated with the Suminagashi technique, using ink and water to create 108 Zen circles.
This is combined with watergrams , as a symbol of purification and resolving the traumas from my lived experience with meditation and reflection.
